Second Opinion Anti-Malware AppsThe main contenders in the second opinion Anti-Malware race
Although not all designed to replace your main internet security, some anti-malware apps are better at finding and removing malware. So, if you like to be careful, it can be peace of mind to have a second opinion anti-malware app available, or running alongside your main security.
Here are a few of the renowned and more popular anti-malware apps: (See also Malicious Software Removal Tool and Microsoft Safety Scanner.) (Also, a special thank you to The PC Security Channel and Leo for helping me with my malware research.)
HitmanPro / HitmanPro.Alert
As a second opinion anti-malware app, HitmanPro is one of the most well known. If you want always on 24/7 real-time protection, then take a look at HitmanPro.Alert. If you don't need real-time protection, HitmanPro is the anti-malware scanner you can turn to for that last thorough check of your system, before you give it the green light. I've been using it for quite some time now to periodically scan my Windows 10 PCs.
Malwarebytes is one of the most renowned names in anti-malware detection. I've been using their Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Premium) for quite a few years now. It's an anti-malware app which always runs in the background and can be used alongside your main internet security suite. It's nice to see it blocking connections in real time. Since version 3.0 it's now called Malwarebytes Premium. Because of the extra added features, it is said to be able to replace your main security. I run it alongside Windows Defender.
Zemana AntiMalware has come a long way since it was first released. Like Malwarebytes, Zemana AntiMalware comes with real-time protection and can be run alongside your regular main security. It has a simple and clean user interface, and scanning is pretty quick. It was one of the first to pop up and block malware test files I was using when researching malware apps for this site.
So there you have it. The most popular and well-performing second opinion anti-malware apps for Windows devices. I'm very interested to know which anti-malware apps you use, so feel free to let everyone know in the comments.
