If you visit Cakewalk.com you are now greeted with the following.

Thank You for 30 Years of Cakewalk!
Today we say Thank You to all of our users past and present, for helping make Cakewalk a staple in the world of digital audio for 30 years. Gibson Brands has officially announced the end of active development of Cakewalk branded products, but our site and servers will remain active for those who have made our products a part of their workflow. If you’re using SONAR, you will remain unaffected. While we are no longer releasing updates, we are not changing how you can access your products. Moving forward, a small transition team will remain active to help, and our Knowledge Base and User Forum will also remain intact for those in need of technical assistance. As a Sonar user and Cakewalk forum member, I first heard this news around November 18, 2017, but had hoped that things would turn around, before now.

The decision to cease 30 years of Cakewalk work and development, and effectively throw it in the trash, was made by Gibson, the current owner of Cakewalk. Here is Gibson's statement:

November 17, 2017

GIBSON BRANDS ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING CAKEWALK, INC.

Gibson Brands announced today that it is ceasing active development and production of Cakewalk branded products. The decision was made to better align with the company’s acquisition strategy that is heavily focused on growth in the global consumer electronics audio business under the Philips brand.

Cakewalk has been an industry leader in music software for over 25 years by fusing cutting-edge technology with creative approaches to tools that create, edit, mix, and publish music for professional and amateur musicians. Gibson Brands acquired Cakewalk in 2013.

Gibson Brands, a growing company in the music and sound industries, was founded in 1894 and is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. Gibson Brands is a global leader in musical instruments, consumer electronics, and professional audio, and is dedicated to bringing the finest experiences to consumers by offering exceptional products with world-recognized brands.

Many of us Cakewalk customers are still in shock because Sonar is such a powerful and complete product. The Cakewalk team was also regularly pumping out monthly updates and goodies to look forward to getting. (I'd even added a search term for Sonar in the database, ages ago.)

As a PC enthusiast, I'm used to seeing games and other types of software fade away into oblivion, but never such a powerful and superior product in its field, as Sonar.

I'm still hoping that someone will save Cakewalk Sonar.

There are many DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) out there, and many of us have been trying them recently to see how they compare and get a feel for where we go from here. We've even been offered some nice discounts (both privately and publicly) from competing manufacturers.

For many of us, you can try the rest, but you can't mess with the best!

Our fingers are still crossed (see the petition below), and I thank the Cakewalk crew for doing an excellent job and providing the great product, Cakewalk Sonar.
